Litigation is defined as: A legal proceeding in a court; a judicial contest to determine and enforce legal rights (source: Google Dictionary). So basically, Litigation is the process of a carrying out a lawsuit throughout the courts system. Litigation attorney's are the people who handle this process, and insure it carries out smoothly.
There are many types of attorneys. Tax attorneys handle tax. Injury attorneys handle injury. DUI attorneys handle DUI cases, and so on. As many different type of case you can think of, there is a lawyer that handles each case. And for every case you think of, there is also a specific litigation attorney. Each case will have the main attorney, and also have a litigation attorney. This is because the process of litigation is a completely different subject then say, injuries.
Litigation is used in virtually every court case. Any case that involves injuries or other legal injuries, involves litigation. Because of this, there are many types of litigation attorney's. There is a different type of litigation attorney for each of these cases. Even though there are so many different types of cases, most litigation attorney's are used for personal injury cases. Many personal injury cases are incredibly complex and have many different parts to them. In these cases, the workload is too much for one litigation attorney. Often, teams of litigation attorney's are used in situations such as this.
Law is extremely complicated. That is why there needs to be a separate attorney who works solely on litigation. A normal attorney is busy doing work and research on the case, so a separate litigation attorney handles the detail work. The work of a litigation attorney is tedious, and is not for everyone. Litigation work rarely goes quickly, as there are so many details to handle. Because of this, litigation attorneys are occasionally forced to work long hours. This is a universal for most attorneys, though, not just litigation. The pay is above average, but not extremely impressive. A litigation attorney makes, on average, $67,000 a year.
This is an overview of a litigation attorney, and what exactly they do. Many people are confused about the difference between an attorney and a litigation attorney.
